Why copyediting is essential?
Copyediting is a key process that any publication must undergo before getting printed. No matter how well a book is written, it needs to be edited by a professional editor to ensure correctness of spelling, grammar and punctuation. Be it online or traditional publishing, a book can be accepted as a good one, only when it is error-free – free from spelling and grammatical errors as well as other typos. No matter how good or worth the content of a book may be, it will not be appreciated with errors mentioned above. Hence it is vital that books of any kind be thoroughly copyedited prior to publishing. A book with errors will really cut a sorry figure with the readers, though its content is really valid or interesting.
Our house style for grammar and punctuation is The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition (CMoS), and our default dictionary for spelling convention is the Merriam-Webster Unabridged dictionary. Yet, we can handle other well-known publishing styles and/or dictionaries as well, that you may prefer. We can also consider any stated exceptions to our regular house style that you may opt to. Our team of experts focus on the 3cs of editing – Clarity, Consistency and Correctness – and ensure that these are taken care of throughout your manuscripts.
Level of editing
Our range of editing services include Level 1 or light editing, Level 2 or medium editing and Level 3 or substantive editing as detailed below.
Level 1 is a simple editing service that does not involve heavy corrections in grammar, punctuation or spelling. In this, we aim at retaining the author’s style of writing and rarely carry out any rephrasing of text – unless it is very much needed. The purpose of this level of editing is to ensure that your text is error-free.
Level 2 or line editing is a higher-end editing level that we offer. We perform a thorough check of your manuscript for grammar, punctuation and spelling as per given styles and spelling conventions that are provided. However, like in Level 1, rephrasing or rewording is done only when it is very essential.
Please note that if you desire to have your manuscript standardized in accordance with a different publishing style or spelling convention than that your manuscript is currently in (e.g., changing from UK spelling to US spelling), the manuscript will require a level 2 service, even if it is well written.
Level 3, which is substantive editing, is the highest level of editing service we provide. If you are a non-native English speaker, this would be the appropriate service to be availed for your work. This level covers extensive rephrasing as well as rewording apart from heavy intervention in grammar, punctuation, spelling and style. However, for manuscripts of such type, we strive to ensure that the text is revised to correctly convey the meaning that you intend.
Editing of notes and references
Editing of the footnotes and/or endnotes, and/or for the references, further reading, or bibliography sections, which includes formatting and styling, could be done with a different style other than the overall style followed, upon your request, in all the above three levels of editing.
Though you can choose any level of editing service, upon analysis, we may recommend you to have a change in the level, which may be a higher-end or a lower-end service. You may then choose to accept our recommendation or advise us to continue with your original service request.
